Bone Dragon

Bone Dragon Project Summary

This was my second attempt to make a dragon. The reasoning I had was if I sculpted it from the ground up (bones, then muscles, then scales) it would achieve a more realistic result. I didn’t anticipate that the final form would not match what I was going for. The project was a big success anyway, since I learned a lot about anatomy, sculpting, and retopology.

Since good reference material for non-human anatomy is hard to find, the dragon is actually based off of the human skeleton. I sculpted the bones from human skeleton references (from Wikipedia) and then distorted them to fit the dragon shape. I had some difficulties figuring out how to connect the wings, since they are effectively a second set of arms. However, the human arm bones connect all around the ribs, leaving no room for a second set to be connected. I ended up extending the clavicle for the wings all the way down to the sternum, not a very practical design, but it required the least amount of liberties.

For the environment, I used a set of rock assets I got from a free Blender model website and the ivy-gen plugin. I went a bit overboard with the ivy, but now I know how to use it.
